Harris’s Sparrow

This little Harris’s Sparrow showed up in my yard one morning at the end of November. I was so excited to see him amongst the house sparrows.

Isn’t he handsome?

Poor little thing. He sat at the feeders and ate and ate and ate some more. These birds breed exclusively in northern Canada.  He was stocking up on energy for his migration to the southern Great Plain of the USA – a mere 2500 km trip from where I live. Can you imagine covering that distance with a crop full of sunflower seeds?
